With Home Security month coming to an end here are a few more tips on how to secure your home.
With the latest stats showing that there has been a 38% increase in home theft claims as thieves are taking advantage of the darker nights so if this isn't a reason to secure your home I don't know what is!
Nowadays, CCTV is a relatively low-cost security option. Modern IP cameras can transmit information over an internet connection, which means that you can watch your house remotely through an app on your smartphone, tablet or laptop – or even on your smart TV. With motion detection, zoom capability and built-in memory cards, these cameras provide peace-of-mind as well as acting as a visual deterrent to potential intruders.
2. Burglar alarm
An exterior wall-mounted burglar alarm box can also be another effective visual deterrent as well as providing a very audible warning should an intruder attempt to break in. Modern alarms can be wired into an integrated system to send a notification to a users smartphone if triggered for extra satisfaction.
3. Security lighting
External motion-activated lighting ensures that you can check what’s happening in your garden or outside the front door at night. It may also deter an intruder if he thinks he might be seen. Within the house, you can set timer switches connected to your lights when you go out and these will give the impression that your home is occupied, and that people are moving from room to room.
4. Anti-tamper locks
Burglars have devised many ways of tampering with locks – snapping and drilling are two of the most common – so it’s imperative that you safeguard your home with high quality locks. Choose those that conform to British Standards (BS3621), and look for manufacturers who have developed anti-snap, anti-drill, anti-pick and anti-bump locks.
Call your local Locksmith in Essex, A.RLocksmiths, and ask them to come round and do a home security check to see if there's anything more you can do to secure your property.
Have you recently moved house in Essex?
Have you thought about changing the locks?
A customer in maldon called me about mobile key cutting and if i would come out and cut a couple of keys for them as they had just moved house.
When i got there and the customer said they were only given one key for the front door, straight away you have to think then where are the other keys, Theres no way a grown up family who have just moved out of a house only had one key for the front door between them all.
So after talking to the customer we decided it was best to replace the lock in the upvc door and upgrade it at the same time.
As trust worthy as some people might be and thinking that it will never happen to me, it is better to be safe than sorry. If you move house then the first thing you need to do is change the locks, and whilst you have the maldon locksmith there why not ask them to check the rest of the door and window locks to make sure they are all working well.
Need a locksmith in maldon who covers the Essex area then call 07813842390 for a very competitive quote, professional service and fast response.
A customer in southend had two remote keys for a Ford Kuga which had lost their program so he wasn't able to get into or start his car.
One key lost its program as it was dropped down the stairs and ended up in pieces, and the other hadn't been programmed to the car since the customer bought it.
I repaired the damaged remote key and put it back together and programmed both keys to the car. Nice quick job!
If you need a Auto Locksmith in southend or anywhere else in Essex please call A.R Locksmiths on 07813842390.
A customer called her local locksmith in maldon, me, as she had just moved to maldon from braintree and needed her locks changing.
She had a wooden door that only had one Yale nightlatch fitted on it which wouldnt of met insurance requirements. Most insurance companies now require any external door to have two or more locks on them, so i recommended a 5 lever deadlock was needed and she checked her policy and agreed it had to be done.
So i fitted a new ERA 5 lever deadlock that was british standard and would meet any insurance requirements.
Whilst i was there a also checked the rest of the security on the property and apart from a repair to the pvcu by-fold doors, everything else was secure.
If you have just moved home in Essex please call A.R Locksmiths and get us to do a security check on your new home and make you feel safe.

This week National home security month are focusing on the great outdoors - looking at outdoor security.
It’s that time of year when sunny days, seem like a distant memory. Its cold, it’s dark, and yet again it’s been raining!
However, Autumn also sees you planning for celebrations, visiting family, socialising with friends, and of course the endless shopping trips in preparation for the festive season.
At the end of October we see the clocks go back and burglaries increase, with malicious damage rising around 160% at Halloween, whilst burglaries in November peak by 22%, with Bonfire Night being the worst day of the year, as families enjoy the local displays.**
But what can you do? The easy option would be to stay at home, order everything online, invite friends to you, and of course enjoy the endless repeats shown on television in the winter!
However, would it not be easier to look at how secure your home is?
Technology has moved forward leaps and bounds over the years, and the complicated technology that meant paying not only for the expensive equipment, but the rather sizable installation fee is now a thing of the past.
Call your local Locksmith in Essex and get them to come round and give your property a security check and inform you what you may or may not need to improve.
There has already been reports of a few burglaries in Maldon, witham and Chelmsford last week.
So please get a home security check before its too late.
A.R Locksmiths in Maldon can help with any of your security needs, security checks, install British standard locks, fit alarm systems and secure your home after a burglary if it should happen.
Its been a quiet week all round really, not much going on at all.
I've had a few jobs still but obviusly not been as busy as normal, maybe its the calm before the storm!
One job i did have was interesting, a customer in romford got his key stuck in car door lock of which was his only key so he wasnt able to use his car or even lock it back up.
The barrel had failed in the honda civic drivers door so i had to take the door panel off and dismantle the barrel from the inside enabling me to get the key out.
Once i had done this i was then able to program a new remote for honda civic for him, so he then wont have to use the door lock again to open and lock the car.
Along with this i had the normal jobs, people locked out, pvcu door and window repairs, adjustments to wooden doors as they were sticking due to the weather changing, and a few cylinder keys cut in Essex.

Burglary is both financially and emotionally devastating for you and your family. As the nights get darker, burglaries increase by around 20%, so its vitally important to ensure that your home security is up to scratch.
What is stolen?
Burglars look for small and easy items to carry, ideally cash or items that can be easily sold on.
The average cost of domestic burglaries has risen by more than 40% over the last three years due to the use of laptops, tablets and smart phones in our day-to-day lives. These valuables are highly sought after because of their ability to resell quickly. Around 37% of people leave these portable gadgets in places that are easily accessible to a burglar.
Common security mistakes
Burglars look for opportunities and weaknesses in security. Here is our list of the most common security mistakes:
• Like a shop front, open windows advertise gadgets that are left lying around.
• Keys left under plant pots provide a convenient way to enter a home for everybody, not just family and friends.
• Posting your whereabouts on social media effectively advertises your absence to a potential burglar.
• Windows and doors are often left unlocked.
• Keys are left in the door giving the opportunity for a bugler to fish for them through the letterbox.
• Valuables stored in obvious places where a burglar is likely to look first, such as under the bed or bedside drawer.
• Tools such as ladders left outside the property can be used to get inside the house.
• Letters and bills simply discarded in the bin can be used to steal you identity.
Ways to keep safe
• Neighbourhood watch schemes create a local community of people who will keep an eye on each other’s property, working together with the police to build safe and friendly communities. Neighbourhood watch stickers also act as a visual deterrent.
• A Home safe is the most assured way to guarantee important items are safe, even in the event of a break in. It’s vitally important to make sure it’s bolted to the floor to prevent somebody from taking off with it.
• An alarm will act as a visual deterrent to burglars and will alert you or neighbours when activated. It’s also worth turning the alarm on while asleep as 57% of burglaries happen whilst people are at home.
• Fitting window and door locks that comply with BS:3621 are essential when trying to deter a burglar. Statistics show that 73% of burglaries gained entry via the door.
• Shred all letters and bills before putting them in the bin to prevent identity theft.
• Adding security cameras and security lights also act as a deterrent to intruders.
Final advice: Imagine you are locked out of your property, how would you get in? A burglar will assess the situation in exactly the same way. Make sure you are one step ahead.
If you are unfortunate and you do have a burglary then please call A.R Locksmiths and we will be there to secure your property and make you feel safe in your own home again.

Spent the day in witham today as a few different jobs came in for the same area, which is always nice.
I programmed a new remote key for Nissan Navara - removed a broken key in a PVCu door lock and Replaced an Era Lockcase that had failed leaving the customer unable to lock her door,
Also just a note on National Home Security month,
- with the police cutting front line policing and saying they will not repsond to burglaries, please make sure your home security is the best it can be. Upgrade to the ABS 3 star euro cylinder and protect your valuables.
- If you know anyone that has moved house or is moving house make sure they change the locks as you never know who the previous owner gave a key to and if they have given them back or not.
