IN THE wake of recent events, it looks like Brits need to think about their home security more.
Earlier this week Sara Thornton - the head of the new National Police Chiefs' Council - revealed budget cuts and the changing nature of criminality meant police in England and Wales may no longer attend burglary crimes.
This has, understandably, sent a shock wave through the nation but you may be shocked to learn that 25 per cent of Brits have no home security at all.
While Sara Thornton believes there are "a lot less burglaries" now, a whopping 56 per cent of people have experienced a break-in, or know local people who have experienced one.
Readers may be surprised to hear Birmingham is the hot spot for burglary as 77 per cent of people have personally been a victim of burglary.
New research, from the self-storage company Space Station has revealed 25 per cent of those surveyed admitted they have no home security at all, while another 14 per cent have only spent £50 or less in protecting their home indicating to a lax approach to protecting their home and belongings.
Burglar alarms were the most commonly-purchased form of home security, followed by window alarms and floodlights - but is that enough?
Kevin Prince, General Manager at Space Station, said: "It's always welcome news when crime rates fall year after year, but it's concerning to see that so many people are failing to take even the smallest measures to protect their homes from a break-in.
"As this survey demonstrates, burglary rates can vary hugely from place to place, and a little home security can go a long way in discouraging thieves. For big-ticket items, or ones with a lot of sentimental value, we would encourage people to consider secure storage to add another layer of protection."
This lax approach to home security could be explained by the fact that nine in ten people said they feel safe in their local area, and two-thirds said they feel safer now than they did ten years ago.
And while it's true burglaries have generally shown a long-term downward trend across the UK, it's worrying to think that people are becoming complacent about the threat of break-ins – more than 30,000 of which still happen nationwide every month.
